袭人，在英文译本（杨宪益译本）中，是这样翻译的：Hsi-jen，（assails men），“Hsi-jen” 是音译，问题出在括号里的注释，本来译者是为了给英文读者解释这个人名的意思。可是，解释却大大错了，assails men 是“袭击男人”的意思。这就完全曲解了“袭人”这个词的本义，袭人之名是取自“花气袭人知昼暖”这句诗，而不是袭击男人的意思。

在霍克斯的英文译本中，袭人被翻译做“Aroma”，是“芳香”的意思，“花气袭人”，花气，就是花香，这位英文翻译者就抓住了“花气袭人”这个特点，就显然更好。
